This past May, we had the pleasure of working with 826 Boston as they put on their annual “Night of 1,000 Stories.” With this event and others, 826 Boston strives to increase the child literacy rate within our beloved city of Boston. Massachusetts currently holds the highest child literacy rate in the US, with 47% of fourth graders reading at a “proficient” level. Boston 826 is not satisfied though; they particularly strive to increase literacy scores and comprehension throughout Boston’s public schools.
In their own words, “826 Boston is a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life.”
This amazing program also provides field trips, book fairs, and even college essay workshops. This past year, “Night of 1,000 Stories” featured four students from John D. O’Bryant High School Writers’ Room who performed an original piece of slam poetry for the crowd. In addition, Newberry Medal-winning author and poet Kwame Alexander spoke about how powerful writing is to young people, and the amazing coping mechanism it can become. “Night of 1000 Stories” helped to raise $350,000 for Boston’s free youth writing programs this year!
