Boston. A very Boston Wedding. That’s what Leilani and Adam were going for when they designed their wedding day. All of the special details pointed to their connection to the city, with perhaps a nod to Hawaii, where Leilani has family roots; and they added a splash some very personal choices. From their venue selection (ceremony at the Boston Public Library, portraits at the Public Garden and reception at the Museum of Science) to their invitation design to their absolutely delish cookie tower cake with Pez cake toppers, they celebrated the best that Boston and they as a couple have to offer.

After enjoying the beautiful day in the Public Garden, Janette and Wes returned to the Fairmont Copley Plaza for relaxation followed by their wedding reception. And what a celebration it was… the bands’ tunes, Janette’s sisters speech with accompanying slideshow, and the dancing. Of course, I couldn’t stop with that, because we were also able to capture portraits at night on Copley Square and in front of the Boston Public Library. The final treat of the evening were streamers blown into the air drifting down on the couple. Really kind of amazing, actually. So step right into this fairy-tale wedding.
Their pup didn’t get to enjoy the festivities, but waited for them in their suite.

A few more from Amanda and Ed’s classic Boston wedding. After we left the Old South Church, I ventured with Amanda and Ed to the Public Garden for portraits.
Amanda and I had talked a bit about what she liked in portraits, and one of the things we wanted to capture was intimacy in the midst of busy-ness. Usually on the bridge in the Public Garden this is an easy task, because there are tons of people around. On this particular Sunday afternoon, it was actually a challenge to get people in our photo, and then to encourage them to keep walking. They were all so nice and respectful, not wanting to interrupt their session. Oh, the irony. Patience, however, paid off, as we captured this moment.
Not having too many people also had it’s benefits.
We could go anywhere without worrying about them. And were even able to capture a bit of fall, though in general the trees hadn’t started to turn.
You may recall we took a cab to the gardens. Amanda carefully gets out.
Back at the Copley Plaza, we took a few more portraits. Love the lines of the staircase.

Such a sweet moment when Ed dances with his mum (mum because he’s from England).
The toasts were fantastic. Ed’s step-dad and best man went first. He was hilarious.
Amanda’s dad had his turn as well. Of course, he shared one or two embarassing stories.

Another super special tradition. Amanda’s sorority sisters from Duke, sang her a song and passed around a candle in her honor.
Then the party really got underway. This crew knew how to have a good time.
One last treat from their celebration.

Amanda and Ed are both scientists, but they do not fit the mold the word conjures up. Of course, I never saw either of them in their lab jackets, but still… As a couple, they are sweet, romantic, in tune with each other. As individuals, they are intelligent, creative, talented. Their wedding day brought together their style, their love of family, and their connection to Boston.
Talented? Case in point. Ed carved this traditional Welsh lovespoon himself; it’s all from one piece of wood. Typically this is given earlier in the relationship, but Ed’s gift on their wedding morning couldn’t have been more sweet or more appreciated. We included the engagement ring in the photo, another very special gift.
And the wedding ringshot on the Globe.
And now to Ed, during his getting ready at the Copley Plaza. Did I mention his sense of humor?
The gents took the stairs down to the Oak Room, for a toast before the ceremony.
A good opportunity for a portrait of our dashing groom.
Meanwhile, the ladies were still getting ready. Dani Wagener provided her expertise for Amanda’s make-up.

Amanda is a classic beauty; she chose to keep her personal style natural, simple, elegant. It was perfect for her.
The ladies also enjoyed a toast before the ceremony.

The ceremony in the Gordon Chapel of the Old South Church had a very intimate feel. I also especially liked the Gothic look of the space as it reminded of Duke, where Amanda went to school (about 10 years after me).
They included readings by friends.
This little gal really wanted to be with the bride.
Afterwards we took portraits in and around the church and on the square lawn. A casual bridal party shot.

When we finished up there, I hopped in a cab with Amanda and Ed to take photos at the Public Gardens. Love this moment in the taxi. Definitely one of my favorite photos of the year.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming…. Yup that’s right. You already saw these two get married, or at least the beginning of the wedding festivities, so while you are waiting for the final installment, I thought I would share a few from their super fun engagement session. They took us through their old stomping grounds of Boston’s beautiful Back Bay and then to the Charles River.
We started at Bar Lola, infamous for their first date and many others after that. The bartender knew them by name, knew their favorite drinks, even knew what to song to play for them. In fact, that first date ended with dancing right about here….
Since they used to live in the Back Bay, they spent time all around Commonwealth Ave. And it is perfect for photos.
As we made our way to the Charles River, we couldn’t help but enjoy this picturesque neighborhood.

Janette and Wesley married on a gorgeous summer day in Boston. The sun shone down on them as did the warmth of family and friends who had traveled from near and far.
We started the day with Janette who got ready at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. At first, it was just our bride, her stylist and us. Soon enough, the room was filled with Janette’s sisters who were primping, prepping, and helping.
We all walked through the hotel lobby and across the street to the Trinity Church, where Janette and Wes would get married.
Wes was ready before the ladies and had time for a couple portraits with Dave.

Janette walked down to the theme song of the Princess Bride (definitively one of my favorite movies of all time, can’t help mentioning it). And her dad gave her away with a proud smile. Actually I also love Wesley’s smile; he seems to be bursting with joy in this moment.
I don’t know if I have ever seen such a big smile during communion. Clearly Wes’ mom is happy about this wedding. Love!
During the receiving line, guests- especially little ones- waved streamers in celebration.
Then the bridal party and our bride and groom hopped on the trolley to go to the public garden for portraits.

One final image from the public garden. Might be my favorite in a long time. I like the mystery of it.
And I just had to share this one. They (her sisters that is) said she knew how to shop. And this image seems to speak to that in so many ways. I love the feel of it.

Working with the team at the Fairmont Copley Plaza is always a pleasure. When Tracey shared that they were going to offer something new and fun to their wedding clients, we couldn’t wait to be a part of it. You see, having a lounge type area during the dancing and dessert part of the evening has become a very popular trend. We’ve seen it at several weddings and always thought how nice it was for the guests to have an area to relax when they aren’t kicking it up on the dance floor. Often this type of space is created by simply bringing in furniture to the reception room. But the Copley Plaza adds another bit to the puzzle.
Allow me start at the beginning of the party so you can really get a sense of what I mean. Many cocktail hours are held in the Venetian Room, adjacent to the Oval Room. It’s a warm bright space, with elegant gold detailing and stunning chandeliers. Very welcoming. And very ornate. And very traditional. Here are a few from Lindsay and Alex‘s wedding last fall.
After the cocktail hour, guests go into the Oval Room for dinner and dancing. They are often also invited back into the Venetian Room for dessert. So Tracey and her team realized they could use the time during dinner to completely transform the Venetian Room into something spectacular.
Something cool, funky, fun, modern. A wow space. The perfect lounge for dessert and hanging out after dinner.
As it turns out, they had the space they needed and they even have the technical staff to create the infinite lighting possibilities.
All purples, all blues, all reds, all pinks….
Or some combination of colors….
And the mirrors reflect the light back in all sorts of vibrant ways.
From traditional elegance to modern chic in the space of a couple hours. Simply awesome!

Part Two: I left off the last entry (part one) and even with so many amazing moments to share, I hadn’t even reached the heart of the ceremony. Oh boy! So this one is going to be another lonnnnggggg post. But as I said before, it’s not my fault Lindsay and Alex had such a great day. Maybe I didn’t say it before, but I am not-so-secretly thrilled it was idyllic. Why? Because Lindsay and Alex are really lovely individuals- Alex is calm, courteous, thoughtful. Lindsay is joyous, warm, caring. And they put so much time and energy into all aspects of their wedding. Even with these two posts being long, I won’t be able to share everything I want to share. So I will do my best to just give you a glimpse of all that ensued.
We start back at the ceremony. I love this moment when Lindsay’s dad removes her veil.
Alex is Greek, so they chose to have their ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and celebrate his traditions. The ceremony was all in Greek and on the long side. In the midst of it, Alex stole a peek at Lindsay.
The afternoon light coming in from the windows was lovely and warm.
And have I mentioned how much I love this church?! We’ve been there several times and each time I find something new to photograph and a new way to capture the ceremony. It is just so beautiful.
A fun moment. The ring bearer had walked right in front of them as they were circling the alter. He didn’t really want to move. Loving the smile on the priest’s face as he looks down at the little boy.

After the ceremony and portraits, Lindsay and Alex made their way out of the church. Dave captured of them on the stairs. Another new vantage point for us.
Dave and our associate Nikki went with Lindsay and Alex to capture a few portraits on Copley Square. They started at the Boston Public Library, a place I love, and Dave created this stunning portrait of Lindsay. During our premiere, she mentioned how much she enjoyed spinning in her dress. It shows!

When Lindsay and Alex arrived at the hotel, they went up to their suite for a bite to eat and a moment of rest. I joined them and captured this image of Lindsay while her bridesmaids were working on her bustle.
Downstairs in the Oval Room, Dave spent a few moments documenting the amazing decor. Lindsay’s color pallette of burnt orange, creams, yellows, citrus orange and gold was absolutely stunning, especially against the blue and gold backdrop of the room. And Jessica of Jess’ Country Flowers interpretted her vision perfectly. We have tons more to share of this, but I thought I would save it for another post. So this is just a little tease of the beautiful space.
Lindsay and Alex entered to cheers and dancing and fun. The party got started right away.
I have to stop to celebrate their nephew (aka the ring bearer). He was absolutely adorable and was excited by all aspects of the wedding- from the ceremony to the band to the bouquets to Lindsay’s dress.

I have a problem. And here’s the gist of it. Lindsay and Alex’s wedding was simply too beautiful. They are both stunning individuals, inside and out. Really, you won’t be able to resist falling in love with them. Their friends and family are great. The emotions were fun, crazy, sweet, joyful. And then wait til you see Lindsay’s decor choices. So I have a problem. It’s not my fault. But really, faced with so much awesomeness, I couldn’t choose just a few photos. So here we are and there are a lot of photos in Lindsay and Alex’s sneak peek. I guess it’s more of a part one than a sneak peek. And I beg your pardon and your indulgence as I couldn’t help myself. Enjoy.
I started the day with Lindsay at a fabulous apartment in Brookline. When I arrived the place was bustling. Lindsay was getting her hair done and the florist had just arrived with the personal flowers. Truly Lindsay was blown away. I do believe she had tears in her eyes. Her bouquet was just what she wanted.
That’s her dad. Yup, he’s bringing her dress to the bedroom for me to photograph it. But really I just like seeing him hold the dress.

Meanwhile, Dave and our associate Nikki met up with Alex and his boys at the Fairmont Copley Plaza (where we would end our evening). They dashed off to the Public Garden (where Alex would see Lindsay for the first time in her wedding dress).
While they were waiting for us, they popped into Cheers and Dave captured this portrait. Very masculine.
Not too long after, the ladies arrived.
Nikki captured Alex with his back to Lindsay so he wouldn’t see her before he was supposed to.
And then, he sees his bride.
And she sees him.
Sweetness.
We photographed several family portraits in the park and a few details. Dave really liked the softness of Lindsay’s dress next to the hard polished look of the stones.
Alex and the crew hopped into their limos. But Lindsay and her dad had a special vintage car and driver. No windows, just a clear view of the city.
Time for the ceremony. This little one was more than ready. He even walked down the aisle before it was actually his turn.
Did I mention that I love their families?

The Greek Orthodox Cathedral is one of my favorite ceremony sites in Boston. It is simply gorgeous. Nikki captured this image from the balcony. You can totally get a sense of the beauty of the space.
But you can’t beat this moment. She looks so happy to be walking down the aisle.

As a tribute to all of the fabulous couples and the amazing weddings we have been a part of this year, we thought it only fitting to celebrate love in the form of the wedding ring. So here’s a few of our more creative and fun ring shots from 2009.
Our bride Shelley wanted to honor the city where she and her husband were getting married, so they incorporated historical Boston images and special locations into their seating arrangements and used this book as their guest sign-in book.
